Theory one!

Andrew Goodwin

Today in school we learnt about a man called Andrew Goodwin, a media theorist who pointed out some conventions of a music video.

Number one : The characteristics of the genre itself. The type of music will inevitably impact the type  music video it will be. Rock typically using darker colours and Gothic themes, and pop bright colours and fun ideas. Of course you can withstand from following these conventions, but you will notice that they have, because most music videos follow this rule.

Number two: The relationship between lyrics and the visuals, whether what the words are in the song are blatantly shown in the video. For example, singing about apples and having apples in the video, versus not having them. Or having something that could be metaphorically connected to the apple.

Number three: The relationship between the music and the visuals. For example editing to the beat, adding pulses at the same time the drum kicks in.

Number four: Use of close up shots of the artists, often the artist is centre screen in their music videos.

Number five: Voyeurism, looking at themselves as artists, whether its looking at their cd's, playing the record at the start of the video, or looking at themselves in the mirror.

Number six: Inter-textual references, so references to political events, or just other real life issues, or media.
